Free Distro: Distributing independent films and other large media files   VIDEO

 Abstract

The highly modular nature of large music and video files create ideal conditions for the emergence of peer-produced communities of distribution. So far online file-sharing has been dominated by the same works -- marketed and merchandised -- that achieve success in the orthodox market. Freedistro promotes a user-built infrastructure of storage and bandwidth for the production and distribution of independent audio-visual works via file-sharing and collaborative media systems.

 Biography

Toner studied law in Trinity College Dublin and New York University, where he is now a Fellow in the Information Law Institute, with a special interest in the countervailing impact of peer processes and information enclosure on cultural production and social life. He is a member of the Autonomedia editorial collective, and joint administrator of the discussion site autonomedia.org and sometime translator of critical texts from Italian and French.
